I start with a warm and welcoming greeting or if the student warrants it…a joke to get a smile. That goes a long way. I use icebreakers to initiate conversations and encourage students to interact with me. I start off with simple questions like, "What's your favorite book?" or "Share an interesting fact about yourself," which can help me get to know my students better.
I love the outdoors! I enjoy hiking, camping and spending days in tent out in the middle of nowhere cooking over an on open fire. I have hiked to the top of a mountain and did not see another person for 3 days. All alone with nothing but a fire, tent and creek for water. I am also a huge baseball fan, I play golf and tennis. I love my wife and time with her. I joke a lot and have fun whenever and however I can. I mostly laugh at myself.
I became a teacher to contribute to my worldwide community in a meaningful way. Teaching is one of the most direct ways I feel I can make an impact, and I am driven by the desire to help those around me and people I have never met. Being a teacher is an invaluable contribution. I can’t save the world, but I can help people explore it. I ask a lot of questions. This directly engages students in the material and gives them opportunities to achieve a level of mastery. Teach by discovery. Students find it as satisfying as reasoning through a problem and discovering the underlying principle independently. When a teacher is an inspiration for students, they challenge students to use their imagination, intellect, and expectations. They also form a bond of mutual trust and respect with their students. Sometimes they invite the students to be a part of their learning journey too.
